Our Story
In 1947, Josephine Fitzgerald Grasty started a tradition that has continued for over 76 years. Josephine was born in Java, Virginia, on October 6, 1873, and later settled in Chester, Pennsylvania, where she left an unforgettable impact on her family's history. She organized the first-ever FGHT Family Reunion in Chester, PA, on April 27, 1947, just one year before her death in 1948.
The first reunion was a picnic held at the Twenty-Five Club in Chester, PA, which brought the family together for a celebration of family, laying the foundation for many more gatherings to come. Despite Josephine's passing soon after this event, her legacy of unity continued to grow, nurtured by subsequent generations.
In 1950, the reunion moved to the home of Isaac and Louella Glass in Bressier, PA, thanks to the planning efforts of the late Viola Fitzgerald. This was a memorable picnic where the first FGHT officers were elected, strengthening the foundation of our reunions.
Over the years, the reunion has grown in popularity, moving to the Sun Oil Company Recreation Park from 1951 to 1963. This period marked a time of growth and togetherness, cementing the reunion deep within our family's tradition.
Since then, the FGHT Family Reunion has traveled across the eastern United States, from Pennsylvania to New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Tennessee, and back to Virginia. Held on the fourth Saturday in July every year, these reunions have become an annual event, bringing generations together to celebrate our shared history, look forward to our collective future, and honor our past.
The founders of this tradition were Josephine Fitzgerald Grasty, James Bud Fitzgerald, Madella Fitzgerald, Rebecca Fitzgerald, Thomas Fitzgerald, Viola Fitzgerald, Ella M. Glass, and Fannie B. Logan. Their vision has blossomed into an enduring tradition that celebrates the bonds of family and the importance of coming together.
Welcome to our shared history and tradition, family. Here's to many more years of the FGHT Family Reunion.
